Stratum Mixed Use · Thembisa, Ekurhuleni · Gauteng

Thembisa Vertical City

A brighter Thembisa, built together.

The vision

This project would turn the area around the Thembisa Hostel into a lively mixed-use neighbourhood with towers, street-level shops, a community centre and a transport hub.

Thembisa is one of the largest and most energetic townships in Gauteng. Thembisa Vertical City imagines the Thembisa Hostel area becoming a modern neighbourhood worthy of that energy.

The plan brings homes, business and services together, so residents can live, work, shop and belong in one connected place.

The development

What the city would include.

01

Modern residential towers

Apartments for young professionals, families and students, with secure entrances, balconies and views across Ekurhuleni.

02

Shops and cafés at street level

Grocers, coffee shops, fashion and local brands open onto wide, landscaped walkways. Local entrepreneurs trade next to larger retailers.

03

Transport hub

Buses, taxis and minibus taxis in one hub, with room planned for future rail. Getting to work across Gauteng becomes easier.

04

Community centre and green plazas

Spaces for events, youth programmes, sport and relaxation. Green plazas give the neighbourhood a place to gather.

05

Jobs and skills

Retail, maintenance, logistics and management roles inside the development, with priority given to Thembisa's young people.

06

Shop where you own

Approved SAMBO members could share in apartment rent, the rent paid by trading businesses and the profits of those businesses.
